8th Grade - Algebra I - Unit 1: Solving Equations

Solve:

1. 3x = -9
2. x + 5 = -242

New Project

For this project you are going to be designing a new Earth colony from the ground up. We'll combine what you've been learning with civics, earth science and urban planning.

To get started, assume transportation is not a problem. We have new technology that can transport things from Earth in just under one year. Also, we have the ability to create atmoshperes people can breathe inside buildings.

NASA is ready to launch the first shipment. You will have two housing units that sleep five people each, a science lab, a food growing station and two units that can be turned into anything you think your colonists need. Also, they are sending a new 3-D printer that can print things out of any natural material back on earth (wood, metal, yarn... :) ) up to the size of Maggie's office.

Pick which planet you've studied that you want to colonize.

On a FSP:

  1. Which planet did you pick and why?
  2. What will you call your colony?
  3. Think about what you have learned about Richmond city and Henrico county government. What kinds of services will you need to add to keep your colony going and attract new people?
  4. Start mapping out your colony. Use what you have learned from reading about Savannah and other locations.
